Christmas Card Workshop 2009

Come and join us this coming month for a Christmas card workshop. They are a bunch of fun and a great time to create together with friends. Bring your own supplies or use ours. We are creating cards to be sold and funds will support missionaries. This project will be an ongoing one, come check it out this coming month and find out more. Plein Air at the Zoo

Wednesdays are half off for Franklin County residents so we are taking advantage! We met at the church at 9:30 am for anyone wanting to carpool, then meet inside zoo entrance around 10 am. Bring art supplies and a bagged lunch.Plein Air painting is not restricted to parks. Back in 07 we took many trips together to paint at the zoo. Personally I love the interaction with the children. It's like you get to be one of the attractions for the little people. We have wanted to take a group to the zoo for a while so if you are interested send us an email. deborah.correa@goodgrapes.org

Seen above giving a power point presentation Tim gave us some great insight into the journey of a Christian illustrator. Along his journey he illustrated for large corporations, Hallmark, Focus on the Family and children's books for large publishing houses. According to the world, Tim has made "it." He has accomplished his goals. Yet in his candor and humility, Tim made clear he hasn't "arrived." The Christian life is a journey which has no destination on earth. Tim is consistently looking towards the higher goals and impacting people's lives.

Growing A Community (Garden)

Saturday May 23th 11:00am or Sunday 24th 2:00pm; Help us garden, and create a place where imagination grows and where a community is cultivated.

Artists are coming together with gardeners and community organizers to cultivate a community (4,352 sq. ft. garden). Together we are investing in the King Lincoln district and much more. We are involving the community with gardening and providing fresh produce to those in the area as well as distributing produce at the 5th Ave food pantry. You don't have to be an artist or gardener to come & help. Just send us an email if you're interested in getting involved. In addition to the movie nights, and plant exchange we had last year we plan on hosting a variety of other community events at the garden. Check back for more about a community cookout or a community art project.

As CCAD exhibitions (Bureau for Open Culture) transitions out of their year long commitment we would like to come alongside the community to continue impacting the neighborhood and building a Green space in Urban Columbus .

Group Collage

Last & Final night to work on this collage project as a group. The date reflects a change in our latest newsletter.

Please bring beads, jewels, and other objects of interest to attach to our groups collage. Also bring transparencies that can cover parts of the collage while allowing the imagery to show through (such as screen mesh, colored plastics that can be cut). We will have a drill that evening on hand to attach larger objects. Holes will be drilled so that larger objects can be secured from the back of the board with twine. We will provide paint and brushes, however you could use your own if you prefer.

It was the ultimate challenge bringing motivated, talented artists diverse in styles with different aesthetics, each with a different vision together to create a piece. 8 artists accepted the challenge together we prayed, discussed a direction and prayed again, then courageously moved forward. The result was 2 hours of stimulating creativity. Yes there was different opinions at times, but together we worked off of, over and besides, one another's creativity. We all plated off the ideas started by one person then reinterpreted by another.

The result was something none of us planned for or visualized - a cohesive work of art. Now it's not finished, yet. 2hours is hardly enough time to create a masterpiece, but it is well on it's way to becoming a successful piece we can all feel proud of. If you wish to rise to the challenge then bring interesting materials and join us for the finish.

Canvas Party

Canvas Stretching Party

Wednesday, February 25 ( 7PM - 9:30PM Room CC-102 )
Wednesday on the first floor of the Community Center; we went over how to prepare and gesso your own canvas. We provided muslin, a light weight canvas material, light weight stretcher strips, and primer. The canvas is yours to have compliments of the Visual Arts Ministry and those who contributed. The Oswalts (pioneers in their own Artistic Adventures) donated the stretcher strips and Danny Tuss from CCAD Exhibitions donated 16x12 feet unprimed muslin and 12x15 feet primed muslin.

Kate Purnell and Deborah Correa taught how to stretch and prepare canvas and we gave out a handful of finished canvas. Knowing how to prepare your own canvas is very useful for an artist. The end result is often cheaper, better quality, and can be made to better suit your purpose. We have plenty of canvas left from this last canvas party and will be having canvas parties periodically. Email us for more information on the next party. If you are interested in donating materials; partner with us in distributing them through our classes, workshops and parties!

The Freedom Center

"If the forces of injustice can take an active role in tearing down humanity then let us stand. Let all those who weep for those that bleed stand. For if we were created in the image of the one who bleeds for humanity then how much more were we created for? Let the building up of one another be on display, like glory of the radiance we were made to reflect". - Josh

"This was my second trip to the Freedom Center, but there is so much to see there I could go ten times and not see it all. I think what impacted me the most on this trip was the animated short film "Suite For Freedom". This film was made up of four different hand-drawn animations, each artists created a animation telling a story of freedom. The individual styles of each artist made their story come alive.

The Freedom Center is built on the north bank of the Ohio River; the border of Freedom. The moment visitors exit the Freedom Center the sight of the river reminds them that they are standing in Freedom. Not just the north side of the Ohio river, but today we are free from the institution of racial slavery in America. Another significant exhibit at the museum is the portion on modern slavery. We can think that slavery is a thing of the past, but in fact there are more slaves now then there has ever been. Slavery takes the form of bonded laborers in cigarette factories in Africa, illegal tomato pickers kept from freedom by their fear of law enforcement in Florida, and a growing industry of sex slaves, which is alive and well here in the US. This portion of the Freedom center not only informs the visitor about these crimes, but also the people combating them; our modern day heroes. I left the Freedom Center with a deeper understanding of the injustice we inflict one another, and a strong desire to bring about justice for those still in bondage, in addition to a overwhelming thankfulness for the Freedom I experience every day". - Deb

Pumpkin Fun

Pumpkin Fun this October!
We started out on the 19th with Oversized Coloring Book design for the Havest Bash! The next week we had a pumpkin decorating workshop. At the harvest bash the following week we used the backdrop we made for a photo opportunity. Many families had cameras and left with great shots of their little ones. We took photo's for families who did not have a camera that evening. They are able to download their photo's from our website. Some photo's will be color corrected so check back for more on this event.

Our community creates art on location in the spring & summer, but during winter we create opportunities for the community to learn. We offer one day workshops as previews to our 5 week classes. These workshops offer an opportunity to create a piece of art with little commitment. However you might get hooked and come back for the art classes. November - Drawing Workshop!

 Have you been wanting to work on your drawing ability? Well then come join Deb & Josh Correa Sunday, November 11 from 2-5 pm for a free Drawing Workshop! These instructors are known for drawing people together. In this workshop we will do our best to ensure students produce a piece of art they are pleased with. We will introduce drawing basics & several drawing techniques. Together the class will create pieces of art by exploring one of the techniques covered. ___________________________________________ Deborah Correa currently teaches a 5th grade drawing class at Columbus College of Art and Design. She uses powdered graphite in her romantic landscape drawings to create atmosphere. Joshua Correa has attended Laguna College of Art and Design, Pratt Institute in New York City, and the Columbus College of Art and Design. Josh enjoys using materials in an unexpected ways and gets vibrant results.

 Instead of buying dad another holiday sweater, how about a handmade gift? Register to be part of our Holiday Ceramic Workshop. We'll be crafting clay on Saturday Dec. 6th from 1-3pm. You can expect to glaze ceramic ornaments, and use handbuilding techniques to create personal gifts. This event will be held at ClaySpace, an innovative ceramic studio in the Brewery District. This workshop will cost $17 to cover clay and other expenses.

January - Digital Photography Workshop

 Our Digital Photography Workshop is strategically placed in the dead of winter. Why would we ask people to come out when it's freezing? Well, we will be taking the class to shoot the beautiful blooms untouched by winter's gloom at the Franklin Park Conservatory. ______________________________________________Interested in photography? Then learn how to use your digital camera from a team of photographers (cameras also provided). After we shoot at the conservatory we will come back to the community center and learn how to adjust and correct photos on our pc's (or bring your laptop & software for an editing lesson). ______________________________________________This workshop is free but registration is required and admission to the conservatory is not included. So we recommend bringing $11.00 January 11th to the Community Center at 1:30.$8.00 for admission and a $3.00 for a hot cup of cocoa or other treat.

Recycled Art Project

Recycled City - Eco & Art Adventures
On October the 12th our groups built a city out of recycled material for a recycling drive. We set up shop on the side walk around 9 am and got to work creating a city out of cardboard, candle packaging, glue and tape. We had high school helpers construct the city, while several little hands brought color to the city. Folks stopped by to enjoy the art, and several kids had a blast helping. It was great to talk with big and little people about what we are doing. A few of my favorite little people quotes were "Wooe, this is so cool" and "This is like the coolest thing ever!" This truely was a great project. It was also a fun and creative way to encourage recycling. And a great opportunity for two different ministries to work together. All materials were recycled after the city was disassembled at 6 pm.

A Creative Creation Story

There once was a magic kingdom built upon the stone in front of a great place of meeting. In one day was this magic kingdom built and in one day it was destroyed. But this kingdom was so great because many hands, big and small helped build it.  You see the people with the plan to build this kingdom were adventurers, ART ADVENTURERS. In order to be such an adventurer you have to be willing to open your mind and heart to journey through a land called creativity. Yes it looks impossible to grasp, but all are capable of such greatness. As these adventurers did embark upon such a journey, they first gathered supplies that might suit the building of the kingdom. You know you can not build a kingdom without the proper building materials. There was more than meets the eye to the façade of cardboard, for this was magical material. It attached itself together as if it were real stone, yet it is marvelously equipped to be malleable unlike stone. And unlike stone it was easy to be deconstructed. Along the way we met new companions on a wild and creative journey. A troupe known as ECO OF CREATION CARE!!! Without their help these journeymen would be lost. Out of the woods this magical magical material came and morphs from one form to another. The ECO troupe also had brought towers to collect this magical material from travelers. For their great task is to take such materials to the grand renewal. All ages and classes added to the structures and took away what they would, pure enjoyment. Look out for the ART ADVENTURERS in your land. They are dangerous and are not afraid to get their hands dirty or their feet wet. As easy as it may seem to resist you may find yourself falling in line behind them curious to see where they might be led. It is an ADVENTURE after all!

ECO is the Creation Care ministry of Vineyard Church of Columbus. Our purpose is to educate people about God’s perfect designs for His creation. Implementing practical programs to care for His creation, while living more cooperatively within the grand design. We meet the first Monday of every month at 7pm in the VCC Café. Currently our study group is concluding a discussion on Simpler Living. Opportunities: Tithe your trash! VCC started recycling paper in July of 2006. We have recycled over 65 tons of paper and earned over $600.00.(magazines, newspaper, junk mail, bulletins & aluminum can recycling)     Volunteer: Annual Green Living Fayre, at the Flying J Farm on 9/1/07 & 9/1/08. Volunteer: Nature Conservancy at Big Darby Headwater Nature Preserve. -                                     Gardening in 2008: South Side plot and Shamar Garden at Flying J Farm. Garden produce was given away at the FOTV food pantry.

We farmed 3/6 - 10 X12 plots in an urban rundown neighborhood community garden on the South Side of Columbus.  Without a great deal of gardening knowledge, we began planting, learning, growing and sowing the land. In July, we began providing Fruit of the Vine Panty with chemical free produce (tomatoes, cilantro, basil, peppers, beans, lettuce, radish, eggplants, sunflower seeds, yellow squash, zucchini, pears, turnips, cucumbers, carrots) We harvested food and cultivated friendships for 3 months with “regulars” who came to receive fresh healthy food." - Niki Myers -                                              - 2007 -                                Giving away recycled content toilet paper at a table in the lobby.                                     Arbor Day 2008: gave away over 500 tree seedling for planning to Kidz Quest (1st – 5th grades) after each service.

Painting on Jasper Street

This past Sunday we painted both little kids and big kids faces to support Sarah DeAngulo's mural opening. Jasper Street is a huge mural made up of colorful characters in whimsical settings installed at Vineyard Church of Columbus. The mural was painted by Sarah DeAngulo with the help of several volunteers. The theme of Jasper Street is taken from a passage in Revelations describing the New Jerusalem. Sarah's interpretation is alive with color, texture, humorous characters, creative settings, and delightful details.

Everyone who helped feels a sense of pride because the mural is absolutely amazing.

We were able to get in on the action and support Sarah by offering face painting at the opening of Jasper Street. Kids lined up to become their very own piece of art, well others crowded around to watch. Alex even painted a portrait of our friend Mike, on his arm!

Face Painting

Face painting is a simple way to engage people where ever we go, and always popular!

One Sunday in August we went to the Park of Roses and set up a sign that read "free face painting".

Though we set up with the intent to paint kid's faces, we ended up painting as many adult arms as we did faces.

It was a fun opportunity to share what we have with the larger community & several of our neighbors took advantage of our offer. Josh painted some beautiful designs on a couple of faces and arms, and we had a good time getting to know new people.

It is very rewarding to see the children light up when they get to see the results. As I speak with my little guest its funny when they're deciding just the right color for their mouse or butterfly. It's beautiful to see a little personality forming on the simple decisions made in the chair besides me. It is also very rewarding to see adults jump in on the fun and show the world they are still a kid at heart.

Over-sized Coloring Books

August 31st we went to Schiller park with a 4x8 feet coloring surface. We brought 20 gallons of paint and a box of pastels. Unfortunately there were more dogs then kids at the park. So we were unable to finish the first panel and did not use the paint this time around. However it does not take many kids to make this art adventure a blast!

We choose to do this event at Schiller park to help raise awareness of the group show happening at ClaySpace. The next location we are scouting out for this event is the children's hospital park.I love this event because it's great way to interact with the kids. Most people are surprised to see us out there with a large art project and a huge tarp covered with paint cans. But the children know an opportunity when they see one and jump right in as soon as they get the green light from mom or dad. Even a few adults and teenagers had some fun with the over-sized coloring book.

This is the first of many panels that we are going to produce. Each one will be colored/painted on location together with an unsuspecting group of little artists.

ClaySpace 831Gallery is a gem hidden away among the brewing culture just south of downtown. If you are interested in Ceramics then prepare to fall in love with this delightful studio/gallery. Currently on display is "Cultivating Growth" or as we like to call it the grow show. We are very glad to have partnered with 831Gallery to host this event. ClaySpace is a for profit business that exists to provide a creative venue to artists of all ages and levels. Owner Tami Knight wants to give people a chance to pursue their love for ceramics, at an affordable cost. She has created a "Space" like no other in the city.

We are in the process of organizing a one day workshop near Christmas time. The focus of this event is to produce gifts for family, friends, or for charity. We put on this group show to cultivate the artists in the community. Sometimes you just need to put one foot in front of the other. This show allows artist freedom to continue on with out the burden of putting a whole show together. The broad topic encourages the artist to produce work that is hopeful/positive in nature. Whether it is the growth of a child, personal growth, spiritual growth or simply a landscape that represents botanical growth. This show is diverse in styles, medium and growing themes........

This show is truely a community event. Jennifer Johnson helped us put together the food for the event, all the food was locally grown. Tongsue Ly and Matthew Flegle also provided some of the beautiful produce from "To Whom Do You Beautifully Belong?"garden project. This project is a year-long exhibition of the transformation of an underutilized parcel of land located in a concentrated urban environment. Noel Acevedo and Joshua Correa designed the promotional material. Deidre Comrie and Wes helped me hang the show, their input and expertise made this show impressive. Diana Lynd helped with framing. Cheryl Beachy sponsored the Crimson Design award. John McNeal & Adum Kimura contributed their musical talent to the show. Sarah D, Tyson, & Erin handed out cards and spoke with people at CCAD. Mike Lovette captured the show on film. And many other hands pitched in on Labor Day, not to mention the many of you who have prayed for me and encouraged me in-regard to the show. THANK YOU!! - Deb

2007 Prayer Nights

In 2007 we gathered each Sunday night to pray for the arts community in Columbus. We met Sunday evenings at 7:00pm, ate together and prayed for the community.

We prayed for individual needs as well as the communities needs. We prayed for arts in the church and in Columbus. We prayed and we listened. www.visualsanctuary.org

Plein Air Painting in the Parks

Do you love to get out on location and paint... bring a guitar a few drums and you might just have an art adventure. Getting out to the parks in the Columbus area is a regular part of our scheduled events. But Plein Air painting is not the only event that takes place in the parks.

Earlier this summer we went to the Rose Festival at Whetstone Park for our Sunday afternoon outing. I took a gazillion photos of the roses while some of the group sat around a fountain and sketched. It was a very hot day and we all eventually migrated to a shady spot on the lawn, where we talked and painted and laughed and sketched. Behind us children played and infront of us roses danced in the breeze- it was just how a Sunday afternoon should be spent.

We visited Blendon woods on the North East tip of Columbus. It was earlier in August, that day the heat was not too extreme. We found a large shaded spot near the woods and and set up our art artillery. We all had our own projects and we were able to work along side each other. We also had the opportunity to pray for one of our artist at the end of our time together.

We joined potluck in the park on August 17th at Whetstone park. We brought food & drink and feasted & face painted. Our sign read free face painting and though we set up with the intent to paint kid's faces, we ended up painting as many adult arms as we did faces.
It was a fun opportunity to share what we have with the larger community. Several of the events we put on will happen again so don't put on sad face, but shoot us an email and we'll let you know when the event will happen again.

The more diverse our group gets the more opportunities we have to share and learn what God has given us. At Innis Woods Metro Garden we set up a spot in the shade. This time we had some boys and their father come. It was a joy to show them the joys of chalk pastels. They make a mess, but you sure have fun doing it. A couple of other people went out near the creek and drew the hillside.

Painting on location might feel like exercise but after you get use to it, exercise is so much fun. The image above is half painting and half photo (painting 100% Plein Air).

This video is made up of images from current and past outings. I've also included a few audio clips of from Sunday night prayer. In the future we would like post some of the sessions to encourage the community.

Plein Air painting is not restricted to park either, back in 07 we took many trips together to paint at the zoo. Personally I love the interaction with the children. It's like you get to be one of the attraction for one or more little person. We have wanted to take a group to the zoo this year so if your interested send us an email.

Trip To Central Vineyard Cincinnati

The third week of the arts outing we decided to take a trip to Cincinnati and visit Vineyard Central. We had a chance to explore a new place and build community. Two of our members had previously lived in Cincinnati and served as gracious tour guides. Besides visiting two Vineyard communities we also visited several museums and gardens in Cincinnati and Kentucky. (Alex) One of my favorite parts was the history museum in the Union Station Museums, it was like a portal into the past. You started from most recent history and ascended into the late 18th century. I also enjoyed the opportunity to draw historical objects.

When we arrived at the Vineyard Central we discovered we had arrived on a work day. Every fifth Sunday the church spends time working on their buildings and grounds. The church and the community was very inspiring and refreshing to be around. We were given a tour, fed and put to work. On the tour we were told of the communities history and learned that the church rents out studio space for artists in the neighborhood. The building itself is breath taking and it made us feel good that we could help restore such a building.

(Deb) We did a lot of fun things but the most meaningful was helping out at Central Vineyard. We served together, Mike and Alex cleaned the women's bathroom, then a whole mob of us cleaned the mens room. Ahh that was fun. Serving brings joy to the giver and reciever, both parties are blessed, it's just how God wired us.
We are meant to make a difference and influence change in the world around us. We are interested to see how God can use art as the catalyst for change. We live in a media driven culture and have such an opportunity to bring our culture foward into the light of purity and health.
